A minor earthquake of magnitude 1.9 was registered in the UAE on Friday night, according to the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM). The tremor, which occurred at 9:57 PM UAE time, was centered in Al Halah, Fujairah, near Wadi Tayyibah, and had a depth of 5 kilometers.
Residents of the area reported slightly feeling the quake, although it caused no damage. The UAE, while experiencing seismic activity occasionally, remains largely unaffected by major earthquakes. An NCM official reassured the public in a statement to Khaleej Times, “The UAE has low to moderate seismicity; hence we are safe. We are not on the active seismic belt. We have frequent tremors ranging from two to three in a year.”
This recent quake follows a 2.8 magnitude earthquake in Masafi on the border of Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah in January, and tremors felt in Khor Fakkan in April, highlighting the region’s mild seismic activity.
