Migrante Middle East urges government aid and OFW caution after Qatar arrests

Migrante Middle East has voiced alarm over the arrest of 20 Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in Qatar following a political gathering tied to former President Rodrigo Duterte’s birthday. In a statement issued on March 29, 2025, the group stressed the urgency of providing legal aid to those detained and called on the Marcos administration to act swiftly without politicizing the situation.

While one of the detainees has reportedly been released, 19 OFWs remain in custody as Philippine officials coordinate with Qatari authorities. Unauthorized assemblies in Qatar are considered illegal, carrying possible jail terms of up to three years.

Migrante reminded all OFWs across the Gulf region to be aware of and respect local laws, especially when it comes to political expression. “The right to speak out should never come at the cost of your safety or employment,” the group emphasized, urging migrant workers to think carefully before engaging in political actions in host countries.

Beyond the immediate legal crisis, the group also encouraged OFWs to reflect on broader political realities in the Philippines. They warned against blind allegiance to political dynasties and instead called for a renewed focus on systemic reforms—such as better wages, an end to contractualization, and more local job creation to reduce the need for overseas work.

As efforts to secure the release of the remaining detainees continue, Migrante is also calling for unity among Filipinos abroad and at home in fighting for long-term change that truly benefits workers and their families.
