Migrant Workers Office in Kuwait debunks false claims on Filipina worker’s involvement in tragic incident

The Migrant Workers Office (MWO) in Kuwait has issued a strong statement against the spread of fake news concerning a Filipina domestic worker’s alleged involvement in a tragic incident that took the life of a Kuwaiti child. The false claims have been circulating on social media, sparking significant confusion and concern among the Filipino community in Kuwait and beyond.

In a Facebook post, the MWO-Kuwait directly addressed the misinformation, cautioning the public against sharing unverified claims. The government office clarified that certain posts alleging that the domestic worker was coerced into confessing are entirely baseless. The statement read: “WARNING! BABALA! ⚠️ The information in the screenshot below is false or misleading. Please do not post wrong information or fake news. Please check, verify, and validate information before posting or sharing.”

The fake news in question gained traction through social media posts claiming the Filipina worker had been absolved of any involvement and that another individual had confessed to the crime. These posts, shared multiple times, caused widespread confusion and unnecessary distress within the Filipino community.

The tragic incident, which reportedly involved the death of an 18-month-old Kuwaiti child, has already drawn widespread attention. According to earlier reports, the domestic worker had allegedly confessed to placing the child in a washing machine, citing frustration as the motive. The child succumbed to injuries despite immediate medical intervention.

Both Kuwaiti and Philippine authorities have assured that the case will be handled thoroughly and that the rights of the domestic worker will be protected within the framework of Kuwaiti law. The Philippine Embassy in Kuwait and the Department of Migrant Workers in the Philippines have also issued statements offering condolences to the victim’s family and pledging legal assistance to the accused.

The Migrant Workers Office in Kuwait continues to monitor developments and reiterated its commitment to supporting the Filipino worker while ensuring the due process of law.

In Kuwait, spreading false information online is a serious offense punishable under strict laws aimed at combating misinformation. Individuals found guilty of disseminating fake news face fines ranging from KD 3,000 to KD 6,000, with repeat offenders risking fines of up to KD 10,000 and imprisonment for up to three months.
