The UAE’s mandatory midday break, implemented to protect workers from extreme heat, will officially end tomorrow, September 15. The break, which ran from June 15 to September 15, prohibited work under direct sunlight between 12:30 PM and 3:00 PM across the country.
For the 20th consecutive year, the policy was enforced to safeguard the health and well-being of laborers during the hottest months. Companies found violating the rule face fines starting from AED 5,000, which can reach up to AED 50,000 for multiple offenses. However, jobs related to essential services like water supply, electricity, and roadwork were exempt, requiring a special permit to continue operations during the restricted hours.
Employers were also required to provide shaded areas, fans, and sufficient drinking water to ensure workers’ safety. The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) conducted inspections and awareness campaigns to ensure compliance.
