Tony Vaughan, a Filipino-British candidate, is making history as he runs for Member of Parliament (MP) for Folkestone and Hythe under the Labour Party in the upcoming UK Parliamentary general election on July 4, 2024. Vaughan is recognized as a global Filipino and a rising political icon in England, being the first British-Filipino to run for MP in the country.
With 17 years of experience as a barrister, Vaughan has dedicated his career to advocating for justice and protecting workers’ rights. Vaughan lived in Sandgate with his young family for around nine years until late 2022. Although he currently resides in Canterbury, his commitment to supporting the Folkestone & Hythe Labour Party and working to improve the lives of its residents remains unwavering.
Vaughan’s dedication to public service is deeply rooted in his family history. His mother, who emigrated from the Philippines, worked in the NHS and cared for the elderly in care homes. Her values of compassion, hard work, and dedication to public service are the driving forces behind Vaughan’s efforts.
As a trustee of South Kent Mind, a local mental health charity, Vaughan has been actively involved in addressing critical community issues. He has campaigned locally for better GP services, affordable housing, and against sewage pollution in the seas. Through his legal work, Vaughan has ensured workers’ rights are upheld, helped secure housing for those in need, and held Tory governments to account.
The 2024 United Kingdom general election, scheduled for Thursday, July 4, 2024, will determine the composition of the House of Commons, which in turn determines the government of the United Kingdom. This election will see significant constituency boundary changes, the first since those implemented at the 2010 general election. It will also be the first UK general election where voter identification is required to vote in person in Great Britain. This general election will be the first since the UK’s departure from the European Union on January 31, 2020, and the first to take place under the Dissolution and Calling of Parliament Act 2022.
