In a world where young athletes are inspired by Olympic champions like Carlos Yulo and Hidilyn Diaz, a six-year-old gymnast from Dubai is already learning what it takes to chase greatness. Her name is Samantha Punegova Abuel, a half-Filipino, half-Ukrainian gymnast whose dedication and spirit mirror the determination of the sports icons she looks up to.
Born in Dubai in 2019, Samantha discovered her passion for rhythmic gymnastics at just four years old after attending a trial class. “I fell in love with it instantly,” she said, recalling how the sport captured her heart from the very beginning. Now in her second year of training, she spends about ten hours each week practicing routines and perfecting her skills under the guidance of her personal coach, Pelageya, whom she deeply admires. “She wants to be like her when she grows up,” shared her family.

A young athlete with big dreams
Despite her young age, Samantha has already made remarkable achievements on the mat. She has won several local and international competitions, including a major tournament in Armenia in May 2025, where she and her coach received a special trophy for their exceptional performance. “She already knows the price of winning,” her family said, describing her discipline and willingness to work hard for every success.

Balancing school and gymnastics is not always easy, but Samantha receives full support from The Sheffield Private School, where she is currently in Grade 2A. The school often allows her extra days off to prepare for competitions—a gesture that helps her thrive both academically and athletically.
Pride, passion, and perseverance

For Samantha, the best part of her journey is hearing her name called during award ceremonies. “My favorite memories are when I’m being called during awards and feeling that accomplishment,” she said with a smile. Now six years old and already a decorated athlete, she dreams of one day standing on the Olympic stage as a champion.
