Filipino death row convict Mary Jane Veloso will be transferred to the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) in Mandaluyong City as soon as she arrives in the Philippines, Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Director General Gregorio Catapang Jr. confirmed.
Veloso, who has been detained in Indonesia for 14 years after being convicted of drug trafficking in 2010, is set to return to the country on Wednesday morning, December 18. Philippine officials arrived in Indonesia on Tuesday to oversee her turnover.
Upon arrival, Veloso will undergo a mandatory five-day quarantine at CIW, followed by a 55-day orientation and security evaluation period. She will then be moved to a regular detention cell, reportedly the former cell of Cassandra Li Ong, a representative linked to a raided POGO hub in Pampanga.
Catapang shared that Veloso’s meal requests, adobong baboy and pastillas, have been prepared to welcome her back.
Veloso’s homecoming comes after years of appeals from her camp and Philippine officials for clemency. Her arrival coincides with the holiday season, offering hope to her family for a reunion just in time for Christmas.
