Mark your calendars: UAE welcomes autumn on September 22

Autumn will officially arrive in the UAE on September 22 at 10:20 pm, marking the autumnal equinox when day and night are nearly equal worldwide. From this point, the sun tilts southward, bringing with it a gradual decline in temperatures across the Northern Hemisphere, reported Gulf News.

Ibrahim Al Jarwan, Chairman of the Emirates Astronomy Society and member of the Arab Union for Astronomy and Space Sciences, explained that autumn in the UAE serves as a transition from the searing summer heat to the mild chill of winter. Daytime highs will start at around 37°C with nights cooling to 23°C, eventually dropping to 26°C and 14°C by December 21. Humidity will remain high in September and October before easing by mid-November, while rainfall will slowly increase towards the end of the season.

Beyond the changing climate, autumn skies will offer a wealth of astronomical displays. Al Jarwan highlighted the Orionids (peaking October 21–22) and the Taurids in November, known for their fireballs, as key meteor showers to watch. Stargazers will also get clearer views of prominent constellations such as Orion (Al-Jawza), Cassiopeia, Andromeda, and Pegasus, as well as bright stars forming the famous Summer Triangle.

New moons during the season—on September 21, October 21, and November 20—will darken the skies, creating prime conditions for spotting comets and distant galaxies. Two comets may even pass into view: Comet Lemmon (C/2025 A6) and the rare interstellar Comet 3I/ATLAS.

Al Jarwan emphasized that autumn nights in the UAE are best enjoyed in desert and mountain areas, where the clear skies are free from city lights, making this season a perfect time for stargazing.
