Maris Racal returns to social media to promote film Sunshine amid controversy

Maris Racal broke her social media silence on Saturday, Jan. 4, to promote her film Sunshine, which is part of the 36th Palm Springs International Film Festival. This marks her first public activity since stepping back from social media amid a cheating controversy.

In an Instagram story, Racal shared the poster for Sunshine alongside the screening schedule at the prestigious festival, encouraging fans to “get your tickets now.”

Directed by Antoinette Jadaone, the film follows a young gymnast, played by Racal, who faces a life-altering decision after discovering she is pregnant before her national team tryouts. The cast also includes Annika Co, Jennica Garcia, Elijah Canlas, Meryll Soriano, and Xyriel Manabat.

Sunshine had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September 2024 and received a nomination for Best Youth Film at the 2024 Asia Pacific Screen Awards.

Director Jadaone previously shared plans to showcase the film at international festivals before its Philippine release.

Racal’s return to the spotlight comes after a controversy involving her on-screen partner Anthony Jennings. In December 2024, Jennings’ ex-girlfriend alleged an affair between the two, prompting Racal to admit she was misled about the actor’s relationship status. Jennings later issued a public apology.
