Marcos urges Filipinos to honor freedom by defending rights and building a better nation

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. marked the 127th anniversary of Philippine Independence with a powerful call for unity, reflection, and action, urging Filipinos to protect their hard-earned freedoms and use them to uplift the nation.

In his message to the public, Marcos reminded Filipinos of the immense sacrifices made by heroes who fought for the country’s liberty. “Because of their heroism, we now enjoy the rights and privileges reserved for those who have a country they can call their own,” he said.

He called on every citizen to honor the nation’s “priceless freedom” by strengthening their character, improving their skills, and committing to the collective journey toward “progress, stability, and prosperity.” He added, “May you endeavor to enhance your abilities and character to give more to our nation.”

Reflecting on the nation’s turbulent path to independence, the president described it as “long, arduous, and costly,” achieved through the determination of generations of patriots. “Let us continue to bear the vigor of our ancestors as we defend our nation against those who seek to diminish the strength of our people,” he said.

As part of the national celebration, Marcos is set to lead a wreath-laying ceremony at the Rizal Monument in Luneta, participate in the traditional Independence Day Parade at the Quirino Grandstand, and later host a Vin d’Honneur at Malacañang Palace.

The June 12 commemoration recalls the historic moment in 1898 when the Philippine flag was first raised in Kawit, Cavite, signifying the country’s long-fought freedom from colonial rule.
