President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has appealed to affluent Arab states for their support as the Philippines pursues a seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2027–2028 term.
Speaking at the 2nd ASEAN–Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit, Marcos highlighted the Philippines’ peace-building achievements in Mindanao, particularly in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region, as a model that could contribute meaningfully to the UN body’s work.
“Our success in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region and mostly Mindanao in the southern Philippines is the centerpiece of our country’s experience in building peace and forging new paths of cooperation that can enrich the work of the United Nations Security Council,” Marcos said.
He formally reaffirmed the Philippines’ candidacy and expressed hope that the nation could count on the support of Gulf states. “We hope to count on your valuable support as we seek to bring our region’s perspective to the United Nations Security Council,” the president added.
The UN Security Council, one of the UN’s six main organs, is tasked with maintaining global peace and security. It has the authority to assess threats to peace, urge conflicting parties to resolve disputes through dialogue, and recommend solutions or measures.
