Marcos returns to Cebu to see recovery efforts for quake victims

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. visited the Bayanihan Village in San Remigio, Cebu, on Friday to check on families displaced by the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck the province last month.

The site, a joint inter-agency initiative, provides temporary housing for residents who lost their homes or live in danger zones such as fault lines and sinkhole-prone areas. According to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office 7, the village features 67 prefabricated modular units that will serve as temporary shelters until families are moved to permanent housing.

This marks the President’s second trip to Cebu since the disaster, following his initial visit to Bogo City on October 2.

During the visit, Marcos also toured the DSWD’s Family Tents area and interacted with evacuees at the Women and Child-Friendly Spaces in the camp. He was accompanied by DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian and Regional Director Shalaine Marie Lucero.

The modular units, once fully operational, will also double as evacuation centers managed by the DSWD’s Camp Coordination and Camp Management Cluster under its Disaster Response Operations.

Latest data from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) show that the September 30 quake claimed 79 lives and injured 559 others. A total of 747,979 individuals, or 216,947 families, across Central Visayas were affected by the disaster.
