President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has directed the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) to release P100 million to jumpstart rehabilitation efforts in Masbate, the province most devastated by Typhoon Opong.
According to the Office of Civil Defense, Masbate bore the brunt of the typhoon, which displaced thousands and left widespread destruction. Reports showed around 150,000 people were affected, with at least 14,000 homes partially damaged and 3,500 houses completely destroyed.
The aftermath also left the province struggling with critical services. Cellphone signals remain down, with telecom companies offering only temporary free WiFi in some areas. Several roads are blocked by toppled electric posts and debris, while authorities estimate power and water supply could take about a month to restore.
To help restore connectivity, an internet satellite has been deployed in Masbate, giving residents some access to communication as recovery efforts continue.
