President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. marked the 42nd death anniversary of the late Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. with a call for leaders to govern with conscience, foresight, and a spirit that rises above political conflict.
“This day, therefore, becomes an invitation to govern with sobriety, conscience, and foresight. Our commemoration achieves meaning when the lessons of the past are reflected in our actions and in the moral architecture of institutions,” Marcos said in his message.
The President stressed that remembering Aquino’s assassination should serve as a reminder to pursue reconciliation and unity, noting that leadership must prioritize peace over quarrels and dignity beyond differences.
Aquino, a staunch critic of former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr., was gunned down at the then-Manila International Airport—now bearing his name—on August 21, 1983. His death sparked widespread unrest and became a turning point in Philippine history.
Marcos said Ninoy Aquino Day highlights a chapter that continues to echo across generations, offering Filipinos not only reflection but also a deeper sense of civic responsibility. He added that time has given the nation a clearer perspective on its past, underscoring that history serves as “continuing instruction” rather than final judgment.
“It sharpens how we serve, how we listen, and how we bear the weight of an office with a greater purpose moving forward,” he said.
The President earlier declared August 21 a special non-working holiday to honor Aquino’s legacy and his role in shaping the nation’s democratic journey.
