Marcos grants executive clemency to former Iloilo mayor Jed Mabilog

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has granted executive clemency to former Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog, the Palace confirmed on Monday, January 27.

Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin confirmed the decision in a message to reporters, later issuing a formal statement clarifying that the clemency removes the penalties and disabilities resulting from Mabilog’s administrative case.

Mabilog’s legal counsel, Jeric Jucaban, expressed gratitude on social media, stating, “This incredible news represents not only a new chapter for Mayor Mabilog and his family but also validation for those who believed in justice and second chances.” Jucaban shared a copy of the resolution granting Mabilog’s petition, signed by Bersamin on January 15, 2025.

The document acknowledged Mabilog’s contributions to good governance and the accolades Iloilo received during his tenure. It also addressed his earlier dismissal by the Ombudsman, which stemmed from accusations of unexplained wealth and allegations made by former President Rodrigo Duterte.

Duterte had linked Mabilog to illegal drugs, placing him on a drug watch list. However, law enforcement agencies later admitted his inclusion was unwarranted. During a congressional hearing, Mabilog revealed he had been pressured to implicate opposition figures in the alleged drug trade.

After years in exile in the United States, Mabilog returned to the Philippines in 2024 under Marcos’ administration, marking a fresh chapter in his life and career. The Palace is expected to release the full official document on the clemency soon.
