Marcos calls for unity among Filipinos on Ninoy Aquino Day

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. made an appeal for national unity on Ninoy Aquino Day, urging Filipinos to “transcend political barriers” for a “more united and prosperous Philippines.” The commemoration took place on Monday, Aug. 21.

In his address, President Marcos acknowledged the impact Ninoy Aquino had on the Filipino consciousness, noting him as an “example of relentlessness and resolve.” He stressed the importance of setting aside political differences to foster a nation where “empathy, compassion, and dialogue prevail.”

Marcos articulated a vision for the country where love for the nation acts as a guiding force, encouraging a harmonious society where “collaboration and diversity” are celebrated.

He emphasized the importance of breaking away from personal biases to prioritize the welfare of all Filipinos.

“With unity in purpose and clarity of mind, we can march towards a brighter future that aligns with our collective aspirations,” President Marcos said.

Ninoy Aquino Day, marked every Aug. 21 by Republic Act No. 9256, remembers the assassination of the opposition senator at the now-renamed Ninoy Aquino International Airport in 1983.

The tragic event took place during the martial rule of Marcos Jr.’s father.

The airport was later renamed in Aquino’s honor in 1987, under the leadership of his widow, Cory Aquino.
