In a surprise announcement at Malacañang on Friday, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. confirmed the appointment of Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. as the new Secretary of the Department of Agriculture (DA). The president personally officiated the swearing-in of Laurel, indicating a major transition in the department’s leadership.
Marcos, who had previously taken on the role of DA Secretary himself for over a year, explained the reasons behind his extended tenure in the post. He emphasized that the agricultural sector faced challenges so significant that they necessitated the direct intervention of the presidency.
The President expressed his belief that certain critical issues within the agency required the unique authority and influence that only the president could wield. However, with Laurel’s appointment, Marcos has passed the baton to a trusted ally, stating, “I have found somebody who understands very well the problems that agriculture is facing.”
The longstanding friendship between Marcos and Laurel was highlighted as a vote of confidence, with the president assuring that Laurel possesses the necessary capabilities for the position. This change comes at a pivotal time when the agriculture sector is grappling with various issues that impact food security and the economy.
