Tragedy struck on Monday morning as a man plummeted to his death from a hot-air balloon while it was airborne over suburban Melbourne, Australia’s second-largest city.
The hot-air balloon had taken off from Melbourne’s northern suburbs early in the morning, embarking on what was supposed to be a routine flight. However, approximately 30 minutes into the journey, the man fell from the basket.
His body was discovered in a residential area that Victoria state police promptly closed off to traffic. Meanwhile, the balloon landed safely miles away from the tragic incident.
Authorities have stated that they will compile a report for the coroner, emphasizing that the death is not deemed suspicious. Additionally, police are conducting interviews with the balloon’s pilot, other occupants, and witnesses to piece together the events leading to the fatal fall.
The National Commercial Hot-Air Ballooning Industry and the Australian Ballooning Federation have extended their heartfelt condolences to the man’s family and friends. In a written statement, they emphasized the safety measures typically in place in hot-air balloon baskets, expressing their shock and sorrow over the incident.
Acknowledging the trauma experienced by both passengers and the pilot, the statement mentioned that arrangements are being made for psychological support and counseling for all affected parties.
