Man emerges from Makati drainage, prompting police response and canal closure

A mysterious encounter in Makati City quickly gained traction online after a man was seen emerging from a drainage canal at the corner of VA Rufino and Adelantado Streets.

The incident, captured and shared on Instagram by William Roberts, showed the man surfacing from a canal before sprinting away. “I was just walking when I saw a head come out from the canal,” Roberts said in his now-viral post.

Following the public’s alarm over the image, authorities took immediate action. On Tuesday afternoon, they sealed the canal with cement to prevent future incidents and to secure the area.

The Makati City Police, in coordination with the IDMS Tracker Team, launched an investigation and inspected the site. Inside the canal, they found fabric and pieces of metal, which hinted that it may have been used as a makeshift shelter.

Police later identified the individual as a homeless person believed to be using the canal as a place to sleep. According to reports, the man was seen returning only at night.

Authorities have since reached out to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and local barangay officials for assistance in locating the individual and providing him the help he needs.

The Makati Commercial Estate Association has also been tapped to strengthen security measures in the area, while the local police increased their presence to reassure the public and deter any further concerns.
