A 26-year-old man fell to his death while attempting to create content for social media from a cable-stayed bridge in Talavera de la Reina, southwest of Madrid, authorities confirmed on Monday, October 14.
The man, whose identity has not been released, was with a 24-year-old Briton when the tragic incident occurred on Sunday, October 13. The Talavera city council said the pair had climbed the bridge, despite local bans, to film videos for social media.
“As far as we have been able to learn, they had come to Talavera to climb the bridge and create content for social networks, which has resulted in this disastrous and sad outcome,” said Macarena Munoz, the city councillor for public security, in an AFP report.
Heavy rain had fallen in the area prior to the incident, possibly making the bridge more slippery, according to local reports.
The bridge, known for its 152 wire ropes and panoramic views, has long been a hotspot for thrill-seekers and social media influencers, despite warnings and prohibitions against such activities. “We have reiterated on many occasions that it cannot be done under any circumstances,” Munoz added.
