Man arrested for offering reward to bomb Comelec in viral post

A 38-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly offering a P5 million reward to anyone willing to bomb the Commission on Elections (Comelec), the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) announced on Friday.

The suspect’s controversial post, which first appeared on May 5, quickly gained attention, garnering over 120 shares before it was flagged. It remained online until election day on May 12, drawing concern over its violent nature.

According to the DICT, the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) Threat Monitoring Center detected the post and immediately alerted the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG). The PNP-ACG then conducted a technical investigation, which led to the identification of the suspect. The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) executed the arrest and facilitated the filing of criminal charges.

DICT Secretary Henry Aguda emphasized that the government is taking strong action against online threats. “We want to assure every Filipino that our democracy—online and offline—remains secure, and that we are working to keep the internet a place of truth, safety, and good vibes,” he said.

The suspect now faces multiple charges, including violations of the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020 and the Cybercrime Prevention Act.
