Malacañang clarified that President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has no connection to the impeachment case filed against Vice President Sara Duterte by various groups. The Palace described the complaint as an independent initiative by private citizens, with its endorsement left to the discretion of House members.
“The President has nothing to do with it,” the Palace emphasized, noting that Marcos’ earlier remarks on the issue were clear and unambiguous.
This development comes after civil society groups, religious organizations, and families of tokhang victims submitted an impeachment complaint to the House of Representatives. Akbayan party-list Rep. Perci Cendaña endorsed the case, alongside former senator Leila de Lima.
Marcos had earlier urged lawmakers to dismiss such actions, stating that impeachment proceedings would only distract Congress from addressing pressing issues. “This will not make any difference to even one single Filipino life, so why waste time?” he told reporters.
Duterte is under scrutiny for alleged misuse of funds during her time as DepEd secretary and for her office’s expenses. She also stirred controversy following accusations against Marcos and his family during a heated press conference and remarks implying she had planned retaliation should her life be threatened.
In response to Duterte’s statements, the Palace referred the matter to the Presidential Security Command for immediate action. They stressed the importance of addressing any threats to the President’s safety.
Meanwhile, Duterte dismissed the allegations as baseless, calling the administration’s narrative a “farce” and denying that her remarks constituted an active threat. She has yet to attend a hearing related to the threats, which are also the subject of separate complaints filed by the Philippine National Police.
