Maid jailed for one month after taking woman’s suitcase in Dubai

A domestic worker has been sentenced to one month in jail after being found guilty of stealing a travel suitcase from a woman in Dubai, according to a report by Gulf Today.

The incident took place in May last year, when the victim, an Arab woman, was preparing to travel and asked someone to assist in bringing her luggage down to the building entrance. She briefly stepped away to make a transaction at a nearby exchange office and returned to find one of her suitcases missing.

Police reviewed security camera footage, which showed the accused, a maid working in the vicinity, taking the suitcase while the owner was distracted. Authorities later located the bag at the maid’s residence. During questioning, she admitted to taking it and claimed she believed the luggage had been left behind for donation.

Investigators confirmed the theft through surveillance evidence and the defendant’s confession. The Dubai Court of Misdemeanours and Violations stated that the act met the legal definition of theft, as the accused knowingly took property without consent. However, the court said it considered the situation and opted for leniency in issuing a one-month prison sentence under the Federal Crimes and Penalties Law.
