A powerful magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck off the coast of Manay, Davao Oriental, on Thursday morning, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
The tremor, recorded at 9:43 a.m., was tectonic in origin and had a shallow depth of 10 kilometers. Its epicenter was located about 62 kilometers southeast of Manay, a coastal town facing the Pacific Ocean.
Authorities have not reported any casualties or structural damage as of this writing.
The Philippines, located along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” frequently experiences seismic activity due to its position on major tectonic fault lines.
