Lower airfares expected in June as fuel surcharge drops to new low

Filipino travelers may soon enjoy cheaper airfares after the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) announced a reduction in airline fuel surcharges for the month of June — the lowest level recorded this year.

In an advisory issued Wednesday, the CAB downgraded the surcharge from Level 4 to Level 3, which directly translates to more affordable rates for both domestic and international flights.

Passengers flying within the country will now pay additional fees ranging from P83 to P300, down from the previous P117 to P342. For international routes, surcharges will drop to P273.36 to P2,032.54, compared to P385.70 to P2,867.82 under the earlier level.

The reduced surcharge applies to specific domestic destinations as follows:

  • P133 for routes like Caticlan, Legazpi, Kalibo, and Roxas
  • P179 for Laoag, Iloilo, Bacolod, Cebu, and Puerto Princesa
  • P234 for Dumaguete, Tagbilaran, Siargao, and Cagayan de Oro
  • P271 for Zamboanga, Cotabato, and Davao

For international flights, fuel surcharge rates include:

  • P273.36 for Taiwan, Hong Kong, Vietnam, and Cambodia
  • P371.15 for China
  • P378.06 for Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia
  • P425.24 for Indonesia, Japan, and South Korea
  • P940.59 for Australia and the Middle East
  • P1,935.75 for North America and the UK

Fuel surcharges are extra charges on top of base fares that help airlines offset volatile fuel prices.

The move comes as airlines ramp up operations to meet rising travel demand. Budget carrier Cebu Pacific is on track to receive seven new aircraft this year after expanding its fleet with 17 units in 2024. Meanwhile, flag carrier Philippine Airlines is set to add 13 Airbus A321neo jets to its fleet between 2026 and 2029.

Popular local and overseas destinations such as Siargao, Boracay, Vietnam, and Japan are expected to benefit from increased flight frequency — now made more accessible with lower fares.
