Longtime election hopeful eyes Senate seat and marriage to Imee Marcos

Daniel Magtira, a perennial candidate in Philippine elections, once again filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) for senator on October 1, with bold declarations about his platform and personal ambitions. Known for his previous claims of being the “husband” of screen superstar Kris Aquino, Magtira now states that he plans to marry Senator Imee Marcos, citing Aquino’s long-term absence due to health issues.

“Si Kris Aquino, lagi siyang wala, na sa ano ata, sa ibang planeta… Kaya pakakasalan ko na lang, si Imee Marcos,” Magtira said, referring to the incumbent senator who is seeking re-election.

Magtira also used his filing as a chance to showcase his singing talent, stating that part of his platform is to secure a recording contract for himself. He highlighted his advocacy for a “salary increase” as part of his senatorial campaign.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) addressed the matter of disqualifying candidates shortly after Magtira’s filing. Comelec spokesperson Atty. John Rex Laudiangco explained that recent Supreme Court rulings have reduced the grounds for declaring a candidate as a nuisance. Lack of campaign funds, popularity, or party affiliation are no longer valid reasons for disqualification.

“Bagamat lumiit po ang ating pagkakataon… meron pa rin namang dalawang natira para ma-determine na ikaw ay bona fide na kakandidato,” Laudiangco stated.

He clarified that the Comelec still reviews whether candidates understand the responsibilities of the position they seek and whether their promises align with the role. Additionally, Comelec ensures that candidates are not merely filing to disrupt the electoral process.
