As preparations begin for a major bilateral milestone in 2026, the Philippines and Japan have reaffirmed their long-standing partnership following a recent courtesy meeting between First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos and Japanese Ambassador Endo Kazuya, joined by his wife, Akiko Endo.
The meeting, shared by the First Lady on her official Instagram account, highlighted the Philippine government’s appreciation for the depth and continuity of relations between the two countries. She described the partnership as one grounded in “mutual respect, shared values and strong people-to-people ties that continue to grow through the years,” and expressed optimism for sustained cooperation, ending her message with “Mabuhay! Kampai!”
Formal diplomatic relations between Japan and the Philippines date back to 23 July 1956, following the entry into force of the San Francisco Peace Treaty and the Reparations Agreement between Japan and the Republic of the Philippines. These agreements laid the foundation for postwar normalization and subsequent economic and diplomatic engagement.
Approaching its 70th year, the bilateral relationship will be commemorated through the designation of 2026 as Japan–Philippines Friendship Year, marking seven decades since diplomatic ties were officially restored.
Both governments have adopted the theme “Weaving the Future Together: Peace, Prosperity, Possibilities,” under which a year-long slate of events and exchange activities is planned to promote deeper cooperation and people-to-people engagement across multiple sectors.
