An employee at Baluarte Zoo was terminated after a video surfaced showing the worker physically abusing a male lion for photo opportunities, according to a Facebook post by the zoo on August 18.
The zoo, managed by Hon. Luis Chavit Singson, emphasized its commitment to animal welfare, stating that the behavior exhibited by the employee directly violated their standards of care. The zoo’s management confirmed that the dismissal was effective immediately following an investigation into the incident.
The video, which circulated widely on social media, depicted “King,” the zoo’s male lion, being forcibly positioned for photos. The zoo’s management described the employee’s actions as inconsistent with their advocacy for animal conservation and protection. The employment was officially terminated on August 17.
Baluarte Zoo also expressed regret over the incident and assured the public that measures are being implemented to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The management has pledged to reinforce training and supervision for their staff to uphold the humane treatment of animals.
The incident drew attention from the Animal Kingdom Foundation (AKF), a local animal protection organization, which raised concerns about the lion’s treatment, citing inappropriate practices by the caretakers and the lion’s distressed appearance.
Baluarte Zoo apologized for the distress caused and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that animals under its care are treated with respect and dignity, in line with the Philippine Animal Welfare Act.
