Leni Robredo joins mayors’ alliance for transparency and accountability

Naga City Mayor Leni Robredo has formally become part of the Mayors for Good Governance (M4GG), a coalition of local chief executives pushing for clean, transparent, and accountable governance.

M4GG, led by prominent mayors including Benjie Magalong of Baguio, Vico Sotto of Pasig, Joy Belmonte of Quezon City, and Sitti Hataman of Isabela City, Basilan, announced its new batch of members for the 2025 to 2028 term on August 30.

“Being a member of M4GG is not just an honor or a mere ‘badge of recognition.’ It is a profound responsibility. It represents a pledge to serve with the highest integrity and to stand firmly for the welfare of your constituents,” the group emphasized in a statement. They added that the duty calls for “putting transparency, innovation and accountability at the forefront of every decision and action.”

Robredo, who began her first term as Naga City mayor this year, had earlier expressed her readiness to join the alliance and support its advocacies, particularly in addressing issues such as alleged irregularities in flood control projects. She recently held separate meetings with Magalong and Belmonte during a visit to Metro Manila.

Aside from Robredo, other new members include Mayors Wes Gatchalian of Valenzuela, Raisa Treñas of Iloilo City, Susan Yap of Tarlac City, and Abelardo Bantug III of Victorias City, Negros Occidental. All new members will initially serve as observers before becoming full-fledged participants after attending at least three official activities.

M4GG also confirmed that over 70 members, including founding “alumni,” have signed a manifesto demanding full transparency and accountability in flood control projects. Among the new signatories are Robredo, Gatchalian, and Chris Evert Tadeo-Leynes of Umingan, Pangasinan.

Gatchalian, now on his second term, highlighted how Valenzuela has consistently earned the Seal of Good Local Governance and unmodified audit opinions from the Commission on Audit. “Good governance is not a trend in Valenzuela – it has been our way of life for years. M4GG is a chance to bring the same fight for accountability and transparency to the national stage,” he said.
