Civil society organizations, religious leaders, and families of extrajudicial killing victims filed an impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte on Monday afternoon, with the support of Akbayan Party-list Rep. Perci Cendaña. The complaint, citing alleged constitutional violations, corruption, and abuse of power, was submitted to the House of Representatives and received by Secretary General Reginald Velasco.
The filing group, including former Magdalo Rep. Gary Alejano, Randy Delos Santos, and Fr. Robert Reyes, was led by former senator Leila De Lima, who emphasized the constitutional basis of the complaint. The 33-page document outlines 24 articles of impeachment, excluding treason.
Rep. Cendaña endorsed the complaint, asserting it as a pivotal move toward accountability for Duterte’s alleged misconduct. He described it as a challenge to the culture of impunity and graft.
The impeachment filing follows Duterte’s controversial statement about contracting assassinations against high-ranking officials, which she later clarified as a misunderstood remark. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. dismissed the impeachment push, citing no benefit for the public.
The Senate leadership, including Senate President Francis Escudero, refrained from commenting, underscoring their role as potential judges in any impeachment trial.
The Secretary General’s office confirmed the constitutional obligation to address impeachment complaints, pledging adherence to due process and fairness.
