Carlo J. Caparas, the renowned comic strip creator and writer-director, has passed away, his family confirmed on Saturday night.
The news of his death was announced by his daughter, Peach Caparas, through a heartfelt post on Facebook. In her tribute, she expressed gratitude for her father’s creative legacy, saying, “Salamat Direk Carlo J. sa mga dibuho at istorya. Mga istoryang nabuo sa bawat tipa ng iyong makinilya,” which translates to “Thank you, Director Carlo J., for the drawings and stories. Stories created with every keystroke of your typewriter.”
Peach also shared her love and admiration for her father, stating, “Dad, you will forever be loved, cherished, and honored…by all of us.”
Caparas was a significant figure in the Philippine comics and film industry. He created popular Filipino superheroes and characters such as Panday, Bakekang, and Totoy Bato, which were featured in comic strips and books. Beyond his contributions to comics, Caparas directed and produced numerous films, including notable action movies based on real-life events like “Kuratong Baleleng” and “The Cory Quirino Kidnap: NBI Files.”
Throughout his career, Caparas received various accolades, including the Sagisag Balagtas Award in 2008. His nomination for the National Artist recognition in 2009 stirred controversy, which ultimately led to the invalidation of the award.
