Following the tragic incident at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1 that left two people dead, lawmakers are calling for an investigation into the airport’s safety measures—particularly the reliability of its bollards meant to protect pedestrians.
Gabriela Party-list Representative Arlene Brosas raised doubts about the quality of the safety bollards that failed to stop the vehicle involved in Sunday’s accident. “That bollard should not have been destroyed so easily. We may need to provide stronger safety infrastructure for our citizens,” Brosas said, adding that her team is considering filing a House resolution to dig deeper into the matter.
Brosas emphasized the dangers of using substandard materials in public infrastructure, warning that such failures could result in what she described as a “man-made calamity.”
Meanwhile, OFW Party-list Representative Marissa Magsino echoed the need for immediate action and accountability, urging airport authorities to conduct a thorough review of current security protocols. “NAIA must uphold the highest standards of security and safety,” she said in a statement. “We urge the authorities to investigate the incident and review existing airport security measures.”
Both lawmakers vowed to monitor the situation and push for reforms to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
