Albay Representative Edcel Lagman criticized Vice President Sara Duterte for her recent foreign trip during the height of Supertyphoon Carina’s devastation, describing it as an “appalling lack of empathy and concern.” Duterte’s personal trip to Germany, approved by Malacañang on July 9, coincided with government disaster response efforts as Metro Manila and other parts of Luzon were inundated.
Lagman argued that Duterte’s absence during the crisis was inexcusable, despite the trip being planned in advance and having official travel authority. He emphasized that genuine public servants prioritize the needs of the people during emergencies.
“The sincerity of public leaders must be gauged by their selflessness and support in times of nationwide calamities and emergencies,” Lagman stated, suggesting that Duterte should have postponed her departure to personally oversee relief efforts.
The Office of the Vice President defended Duterte’s trip, highlighting the continuous operation of its Disaster Operations Center, which provided assistance to evacuees in nine centers in Manila. Despite this, social media criticism mounted, with comparisons drawn to former Vice President Leni Robredo, who was known for her hands-on approach during disasters.
In response to the typhoon, Robredo reactivated her NGO, Angat Buhay, and the Bayanihan E-Konsulta online medical consultation service, demonstrating a proactive approach in contrast to Duterte’s absence.
