Kuwaiti authorities have revoked the citizenship of a Filipina who initially acquired it through marriage to an elderly Kuwaiti national. Her citizenship, granted under Article 8 of Kuwait’s nationality law, was annulled following her remarriage to an Asian driver after her first husband’s death.
According to a Gulf News report, officials expressed concern over the possibility of her seeking Kuwaiti citizenship for her children from her second marriage, citing potential implications for Kuwait’s national identity.
This decision aligns with recent amendments to Kuwait’s nationality law, which took effect on December 10, 2024. The updated law introduces significant changes, including removing the automatic granting of citizenship to foreign spouses of naturalized Kuwaitis. It also clarifies that while children of naturalized citizens will be considered Kuwaiti, they may opt for their original nationality upon adulthood.
