Kuwait to require military service for men turning 18 under amended law

Young men in Kuwait will now be required to enlist for national military service once they reach 18, beginning with those born on January 1, 2012.

The requirement follows newly approved amendments to the country’s 2015 legislation on national service. According to the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), the revisions were introduced to address gaps in both legal provisions and administrative procedures that emerged under the earlier framework.

Under the updated rules, the period allowed for registration has been significantly lengthened. Eligible individuals will now have 180 days to register, replacing the previous 60-day window. The changes also provide an exemption for families with only one son. In addition, firefighters employed by Kuwait Oil Company will receive the same exemption benefits already granted to personnel of the Kuwait Fire Force.

KUNA reported that the adjustments were designed to resolve delays in processing applications and to manage situations that were not clearly covered in the original statute.

The National Military Service Authority has the power to deploy conscripts across four government bodies: the Kuwait Armed Forces, the Ministry of Interior, the Kuwait National Guard, and the Kuwait Fire Force.

Those who are employed at the time of enlistment will continue to receive their salaries, allowances, and bonuses throughout their period of service. Time spent in national service will also be credited toward their total years of employment.
