Cebu-based media figure Jude Bacalso publicly addressed the viral controversy surrounding her misgendering incident during a press forum in Cebu on Thursday, September 19. Bacalso, who was involved in a highly publicized dispute at a local restaurant in July 2024, explained her side of the story, emphasizing that she had been misgendered multiple times during the encounter.
“I had a valid complaint… I was misgendered not once, but three times,” Bacalso shared during the forum, expressing that her usual response to such situations is humor. However, the issue escalated, leading to legal complaints filed against her by the restaurant’s staff. Bacalso, who is an advocate for inclusivity, particularly in public-facing industries, reiterated the importance of respecting gender identities.
The incident, which sparked debates online, involved Bacalso allegedly making a server stand for two hours as a form of reprimand after being called “sir.” Bacalso has since apologized for how the situation unfolded, clarifying that her intentions were focused on promoting gender sensitivity. Legal action remains ongoing, with complaints including unjust vexation and slight illegal detention filed against her by the server involved.
