Former Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko” Moreno has expressed his pride and excitement as his 23-year-old son, Joaquin, embarks on his own political journey, running for a city council seat in Manila’s first district. Joaquin’s bid aims to continue the family’s tradition of public service with a focus on bringing fresh ideas and a youthful approach to governance.
During his tenure as mayor, Isko gained a reputation for bold initiatives and grassroots engagement, and he believes Joaquin has what it takes to contribute meaningfully to the city’s leadership. “He was the one who wanted this, I didn’t force him. The love for the people cannot be taught, even by the father, he really wanted this,” Isko said in Filipino, underlining his son’s determination and dedication to public service.
Joaquin has been involved in various community outreach efforts and youth advocacy programs, shaping his vision to champion education, health, and job opportunities tailored to Manila’s younger residents. Known for his relatable and charismatic nature, Joaquin hopes to use his background to push for more inclusive policies if elected to the council.
Isko, who is also vying for a return as mayor, acknowledged the responsibilities that come with seeing his son step into politics. “You don’t see any Moreno at city hall, but since now there is a vacancy, he’s not stepping on anyone’s toes,” he noted in Filipino.
In the race for mayor, Isko continues to show strong support, holding a commanding lead of 78% over incumbent Mayor Honey Lacuna, according to a recent Octa survey. His broad base of supporters remains hopeful for his return to city hall, citing his commitment to progress during his previous term.
