Carlos Yulo, the Filipino gymnast who recently clinched two gold medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics, has stirred a mix of opinions by addressing personal family matters on social media. His public statements have sparked a debate among netizens about the appropriateness of airing family disputes online.
Several Facebook users expressed their belief that Carlos should have handled the situation privately. Social media influencer and blogger M.A. Buendia remarked, “Caloy hijo, just a reminder lang na you’re not a Tiktoker okay. You’re larger than life now. If there’s a statement you need to make, might as well let a PR team handle it para align sa branding.”
Popular content creator Ako si Tserman was more critical, stating, “Yung nanay parang uhaw sa pera kaya gumagawa ng eksena. Yung jowa naman parang uhaw din sa kasikatan kaya gumagawa din ng eksena. Parehas sablay eh… Sinira nyo yung once in a lifetime moment nung tao eh. Lahat ng Pilipino masaya sa nakamit nya tapos kayong dalawa ang ingay ingay at ang kalat kalat nyo sa internet.”
On the other hand, Xian Gaza, another social media personality, shared his thoughts specifically about Carlos’s girlfriend, emphasizing the importance of choosing a partner who fosters family harmony. “Ang piliin mong partner ay hindi yung aawayin ang nanay mo para lang mapatunayan sa lahat na tama kayo… Maturity is when you choose peace of mind para sa happiness ng lahat.”
There were also voices supporting Angelica Yulo, Carlos’s mother. Li Hosalla Schonberg commented, “Caloy should learn how Sarah G. respects her parents… imbes pag usapan ang 2golds nya, ang golden hair ni ante gf nya napag usapan ng bonga!”
Others defended Carlos’s decision to speak out. Eli Zaldy Salvador Flores argued, “elders here kept saying they should talk about it in private, but i believe Carlos has the right to share his side publicly as well since his mother shared her sentiments on the interviews and on the internet.”
However, some netizens felt strongly that personal issues should remain private. Bhongskie Dela Cruz Camo commented, “24 years of age, you shouldn’t be here in socmed, broadcasting and analysing what’s going on with your parents… Talk to them face to face.”
