Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso has expressed strong support for the establishment of a “Halal Town” in the capital, a project aimed at highlighting traditional Halal cuisine and deepening the city’s connection with its Muslim community.
Domagoso discussed the initiative with National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) regional director Dimapuno Datu Ramos Jr. during a meeting on August 29. He said the proposed Halal Town would be developed in the same spirit as Manila’s existing cultural hubs like Chinatown and Korea Town, turning the city further into a diverse food destination.
The mayor also suggested certifying restaurants that serve authentic Islamic dishes, reinforcing the effort to promote inclusivity.
Ramos, for his part, expressed gratitude to Domagoso for programs that have long benefited Manila’s Muslims, citing the creation of the city’s first Islamic cemetery and the establishment of the Muslim Consultative Council (MCC).
In his message, Domagoso underscored the city’s commitment to fairness.
The planned Halal Town is expected to further showcase Manila as a city that embraces diversity and respects the traditions of all its people.
