Apple Stores in China are warning iPhone 15 owners about potential overheating issues linked to using Android USB-C cables for charging. This cautionary measure comes as Apple transitioned its entire iPhone 15 lineup to USB-C ports, allowing more universal charging options. Despite this shift, not all USB-C cables seem to be created equal.
According to reports from GizmoChina, the issue arises due to a difference in the pin arrangement of USB-C cables designed for Android smartphones. Specifically, discrepancies in the gaps of the 9-pin and 11-pin connectors could cause the connector side of the cable to overheat, risking damage to the iPhone 15’s USB-C port.
An Apple Store in Foshan, Guangdong Province, has been vocal in advising users to avoid using USB-C cables bundled with or designed for Android devices. The warnings have not been isolated to one location but have been noted across multiple Apple Store outlets in China.
While no incidents of melting or shorting iPhone 15’s USB-C port due to the use of Android cables have been reported yet, Apple Store employees seem keen on minimizing such risks. However, there is still no official information on how the customer’s warranty would be affected if such an incident occurs.
Some speculate whether this advisory is a move by Apple to encourage customers to purchase the company’s own, pricier USB-C cables instead of cheaper Android alternatives. The motive behind these warnings remains undetermined at this stage.
As the iPhone 15 models were only launched last week, it may be too early to observe any widespread issues or incidents due to cable incompatibility. Nevertheless, iPhone 15 owners are advised to err on the side of caution by using Apple’s USB-C cables to avoid potential damage to their new devices.
