Innovative electric spoon enhances saltiness in food without extra sodium

Japanese beverage company Kirin Holdings Co. introduced a novel gadget called the Electric Salt Spoon on Monday. This innovative device enhances the salty and umami flavors of foods by using a safe, low-level electrical current. Priced at 19,800 yen, the spoon is designed to improve the taste of low-sodium dishes without adding extra salt.

The Electric Salt Spoon functions by transmitting small currents that increase the perception of saltiness by mobilizing sodium ions from the food and saliva to the taste receptors on the tongue. Users can adjust the intensity of the current through a four-level setting.

Measuring 25 centimeters in length and weighing 60 grams, the spoon can operate for up to 30 hours on a single lithium battery. Initially, Kirin has released 200 units available for purchase online until June 2. Starting mid-June, the Electric Salt Spoon will also be available in Hands Inc. stores located in Tokyo, Osaka, and Fukuoka.
