Filipino pole vaulter EJ Obiena has decided to end his 2024 season early due to a back injury. This decision means he will miss the Philippine International Pole Vault Challenge on September 20 in Makati, an event his team was set to host.
Obiena announced the news on social media, revealing that his injury was diagnosed during the Silesia leg of the Diamond League, where he finished fifth. He explained that he had been struggling with back pain throughout the season, which intensified during his recent competition. “During the Silesia Diamond League this past weekend, the same back pain that has bothered me all season flared up,” Obiena shared. “Due to the continual spasms, I couldn’t finish my last few attempts.”
Following a medical evaluation in Italy, an MRI indicated a potential stress fracture in his spine, which was later confirmed by a CAT scan. The injury was identified as a fractured L5 vertebra, requiring a minimum of four weeks for recovery.
Obiena was initially scheduled to compete in three more events, including ISTAF Berlin, Zurich Diamond League, and the Diamond League Final, but he chose to prioritize his health. “The best thing to do right now, with ensuring my best future, is to rest and recuperate and come back even stronger,” said Obiena, currently ranked third in the world.
Despite the setback, Obiena remains optimistic about his recovery and aims to return for the 2025 season, including the Southeast Asian Games in Thailand. “Hopefully, now that I’ve identified the source of my back problems this year, with the required 4-weeks off to heal, I’m hoping to return pain-free and ready for the 2025 indoor season!” he stated.
Earlier in the year, Obiena dealt with a similar back issue before competing in the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he narrowly missed a podium finish, ending up in fourth place.
