A woman in central Indonesia was found dead inside a python that swallowed her whole, marking the second such incident in the province within a month, according to local police on Wednesday.
The victim, Siriati, 36, went missing after leaving her home Tuesday morning to purchase medicine for her sick child. According to an AFP report, her relatives initiated a search when she did not return.
Her husband, Adiansa, 30, discovered her slippers and pants about 500 meters from their home in Siteba village, South Sulawesi province. Not far from the path, Adiansa spotted a large snake, alive but with a noticeably swollen belly, according to local police chief Idul.
Suspecting the worst, Adiansa called for help from the villagers. They cut open the snake and found Siriati’s body inside.
Such occurrences are extremely rare but not unheard of in Indonesia. Last month, another woman was found dead inside a reticulated python in a different district of South Sulawesi. Similar incidents have been reported in recent years, including a farmer found inside a four-meter python in West Sulawesi in 2017 and a 54-year-old woman swallowed by a seven-meter python in Southeast Sulawesi’s Muna town in 2018.
