Indian mother sentenced to life in prison for killing daughter over exam results

A 59-year-old mother from Bengaluru, India, has been sentenced to life imprisonment and fined ₹50,000 (approximately ₱33,200) after fatally stabbing her teenage daughter for lying about her exam results.

The woman, identified as Bhimaneni Padmini Rani, attacked her 17-year-old daughter, Sahiti Shivapriya, on April 29, 2024, following an intense argument over her academic performance. According to the Times of India, Sahiti initially claimed she passed her exams with a 95 percent score, but later admitted she had failed one subject.

Public Prosecutor Bhaskar said the confession sparked a confrontation. “A furious Rani questioned Sahiti about the reason behind her poor performance. Sahiti replied in a rude manner,” he explained.

In her statement to police, Rani recounted that she first tried to stab her daughter with a small knife, but when it bent, she returned to the kitchen to grab two more. Rani also attempted to end her own life after the incident but survived and was later granted bail after receiving medical treatment.

Rani expressed remorse during the investigation. “I had boasted to my brothers and other relatives that Sahiti scored 95 percent and was set to fly to the US for higher studies,” she said. “If they would have come to know of the reality, I would have to face humiliation.”

Despite the tragedy, Rani claimed she had remained emotionally connected to her daughter after losing her husband in 2020. “Still, believing that she would change in the future, I loved her,” she said.

Reports also noted that Sahiti had been under significant academic pressure leading up to her Pre-University Course (PUC) exams.
