Imee files fruit-forward bills in 20th Congress; netizens respond with a cocktail of humor and concern

Senator Imee Marcos has filed a series of bills for the 20th Congress, covering a range of sectors from education and disability support to agricultural exports—particularly focused on fruits.

Among the proposed measures are:

PRRD Act / Anti-Extraordinary Rendition

Magna Carta for Students

Magna Carta for Tricycle Drivers and Operators

Disability Support Fund

Climate Change Education Act

Mango Export Act

Pineapple Export Act

Banana Export Act

Dragonfruit Development Act

Moringa Development Act

The inclusion of multiple fruit-related measures quickly drew attention online, with several netizens injecting humor into the discussion. “Onti na lang pa Fruit Cocktail Act na,” quipped Rhadson Mendoza, which drew over 200 reactions. Joshua Pintero chimed in with “Pwede din Fruit Salad Act,” while others suggested a “Grow a Garden Act” or even a “Nestle Cream Act” to go with the implied fruit salad combo.

Carmela Reyes posted a tongue-in-cheek prayer for a “Nestle Cream Act” and “Condensed Milk Act,” prompting one user to comment: “di na lang gawing fruit salad act char.”

However, not all responses were lighthearted. Many netizens took the opportunity to highlight issues they feel are more urgent. Tess Floralde wrote, “Yong universal pension ang isabatas nyo para naman makatikim yong matatanda ng ayuda ng gobyerno.” Similar sentiments were echoed by Avic Cruz, who questioned the long delay of the universal social pension bill: “Hanggang ngayon wala pa. Saan ba my problema?”

Eric Manlapaz also voiced a plea on agricultural priorities: “Subsidy po sana para sa presyo ng sariwang palay… kasi wala na pong kinikita ang mga magsasaka ngayon.”

Other suggestions included reforming the college education system to lessen financial burdens, and ensuring minimum qualifications for those holding government office.

While Marcos has also filed other bills aimed at wage reforms—including a National Minimum Wage Act and a Minimum Wage for Farmers Act—as reported earlier this month, her agricultural development focus continues to invite a mix of praise, satire, and calls for deeper structural reforms.
