The International Criminal Court (ICC) confirmed on Thursday that former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte has been placed in its detention center in Scheveningen, The Hague, Netherlands.
In a statement, the ICC said Duterte was admitted after undergoing necessary medical examinations. “Duterte is under ICC custody at the ICC detention center in Scheveningen. He was admitted today after completing all required medical checks,” the court stated, emphasizing that measures are in place to ensure his well-being.
The ICC also reiterated the importance of upholding judicial processes and announced that details of Duterte’s initial court appearance would be released soon.
However, conflicting reports surfaced as Duterte’s close ally, Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea, claimed he was unable to locate the former president when he attempted to visit the facility on Thursday. Medialdea disclosed that he had earlier requested Duterte’s hospitalization due to medical concerns following his arrival in the Netherlands.
While the ICC reportedly granted the request, it has not disclosed the hospital where Duterte was taken. “They assured us he would be brought to a hospital, but they have not provided any details about the location,” Medialdea told reporters outside the detention center.
Duterte landed at Rotterdam Airport at 4:56 p.m. CET (11:56 p.m. Philippine time) before proceeding to Scheveningen, where the ICC facility is located.
