Dubai has once again stepped up its game by offering free umbrellas to commuters. This innovative service, available at Al Ghubaiba Metro Station and Al Ghubaiba Bus Station, is a collaboration between UmbraCity, a Canadian rental umbrella company, and Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). This initiative is part of Dubai’s 2040 vision to enhance the city’s walkability, providing both residents and visitors with a convenient way to stay cool in the sun or dry during the rare rainy days.
Currently, the complimentary umbrellas can be found at specific locations:
Al Ghubaiba Metro Station – Exit 1
Al Ghubaiba Bus Station – Block F
How to obtain your complimentary umbrella
Obtaining your free umbrella is a straightforward process designed to ensure maximum convenience for all users. Here’s how you can get yours:
Step 1: Upon reaching the automated rental kiosk, scan your NOL card. Don’t worry; this step is only to register your account for the umbrella service, and no charges will be deducted.
Step 2: Use the touchscreen interface on the kiosk to enter your full name and mobile number.
Step 3: Enter your credit card or debit card details. While the umbrella is provided free of charge, it is important to note that it is available for a 24-hour period only. You must return the umbrella to either of the two stations within this timeframe.
Step 4: After using the umbrella, return it to the rental kiosk. Please note, failure to return the umbrella within the 24-hour window will result in a charge to your account.
Charges for late returns
The umbrella rental service is designed to be flexible but also ensures the umbrellas are returned for use by others. Here’s what happens if you don’t return the umbrella on time:
- Free for the first 24 hours.
- Dh10 for one day.
- A maximum of Dh50 for five days.
After five days, the umbrella is yours to keep. This charging policy ensures that the umbrellas are returned in a timely manner for others to use, while also offering a fair penalty for those who wish to keep them longer.
