The support and mentorship she provides her nursing staff have made Raffles Hospital a nurturing and empowering workplace for Filipino nurses, including three remarkable individuals whose stories of dedication and passion are an inspiration to us all.
Javier Zenia Pabualan: From a Childhood Memory to a World-Class Career
Javier Zenia Pabualan’s journey into nursing began with a childhood memory that left a lasting impression. “I pursued nursing because of my childhood experience. I have fond memories of the nurse who cared for my mom and me when I was ill,” Zenia shared. “The kindness and concern that the nurses showed to their patients deeply moved me and instilled in me a strong desire to help and care for others.”

This desire to help others eventually led Zenia to pursue a career in nursing and work abroad. As a Nurse Clinician in the Intensive Care Unit at Raffles Hospital in Singapore, Zenia believes that nursing has the power to change people’s lives. “Nursing is a high-demand career abroad, especially for Filipinos. I chose to work abroad for career advancement, to explore new cultures, and to experience an advanced healthcare system,” she explained. “There is a constant need for healthcare services that are unaffected by economic downturns, providing financial stability and job security.”
Reflecting on her time in Singapore, Zenia spoke about the professional development opportunities that have come her way. “I was given the opportunity to further my studies and graduated with an Advanced Critical Care in Nursing course, which also helped me take up leadership roles,” she noted. “We, as nurses, are valued by the government and companies, with constant support for continuous learning and incentives.”
For Zenia, staying connected to her Filipino roots is essential to maintaining her sense of identity while working overseas. She shared, “I celebrate Filipino holidays like Pasko (Christmas) and stay in touch with family back home through video calls and social media connections. I continue to practice and share our Filipino values like hospitality, close family ties, and respect for elders with my fellow Filipinos and with locals.”
Zenia’s message to her fellow nurses around the world is one of humility and service: “Continue to serve with dignity and humility.”
Cherry Rose Ceniza Payacag: Inspired by Family and Purpose
Cherry Rose Ceniza Payacag’s journey into nursing was shaped by the example set by a beloved family member. “My inspiration to pursue nursing wasn’t driven by a specific experience, but by someone truly special – my late aunt, a dedicated nurse who worked abroad,” Cherry shared. Growing up, she witnessed how her aunt’s profession transformed their family’s life and extended its impact to their entire community. “Her selflessness sparked a fire within me, and I vowed to follow in her footsteps, striving to provide for my loved ones and pay it forward, just as she did.”

Cherry has worked at Raffles Hospital since 2006, and over the years, she has grown both personally and professionally. She feels immense pride in being part of a collaborative team that prioritizes patient care. “My perspective as a nurse shifted when I realized that I’m not just executing doctors’ orders, but an integral part of a collaborative team that prioritizes patients’ health and well-being,” she explained. “Singapore provided me with the opportunity to grow and recognize my value in delivering holistic patient care. This sense of purpose brings me immense fulfillment, surpassing any monetary values.”
Despite being far from home, Cherry has found ways to stay connected to her Filipino roots. “Regular communication with my loved ones serves as a reminder of my humble beginnings and the purpose behind my decision to work abroad,” she said. She also enjoys reconnecting with her heritage by preparing and sharing traditional Filipino cuisine. “Speaking Tagalog or my native dialect while savoring these delicious dishes strengthens my bond to my Filipino roots, creating a sense of warmth and belonging.”
Her message to fellow nurses is one of encouragement and solidarity: “Wherever we are in the world, our passion for nursing and commitment to caring for others remain steadfast. While pursuing our dreams, let’s not forget our roots and continue to uplift and support each other, sharing our experiences and knowledge to make a difference.”
Kristher Hanz Z. Retolado: A Journey of Compassion and Connection
Kristher Hanz Z. Retolado’s path to nursing was shaped by a deep desire to help others during their most vulnerable times. “I am inspired to pursue nursing and work abroad by a genuine desire to help others and provide comfort, especially during their most vulnerable moments and difficult times,” Hanz shared. Growing up in a family where many members worked in the medical field, Hanz’s decision to pursue nursing and work abroad seemed like a natural choice.

After spending seven years in the Operating Theatre in the Philippines, Hanz moved to Singapore, where he initially worked in a nursing home before joining Raffles Hospital. Reflecting on his time in Singapore, he noted that the most rewarding part of his nursing journey has been the opportunity to build strong, caring connections with patients. “There is a deep sense of fulfillment in knowing that I am part of their recovery and healing process, and that I can contribute to their well-being,” he explained.
Despite the physical distance from his family, Hanz remains closely connected to his Filipino roots. “I stay connected with my Filipino roots through audio and video calls after work, especially during my off days. I also make it a point to catch up with them every day through chatting,” he shared.
Hanz’s message to his fellow Filipino nurses around the world is one of appreciation and self-care: “To all my fellow Filipino nurses working abroad, your efforts and sacrifices are invaluable. Always remember to take care of yourselves and maintain connections with your families back home. I salute you all!”

The stories of Zenia, Cherry, and Hanz are just a few examples of the countless Filipino nurses who have dedicated their lives to caring for others in healthcare systems around the world. Their journeys reflect the values of resilience, compassion, and service that define the Filipino nursing diaspora.

As we celebrate Filipino Nursing Diaspora Day, we honor their sacrifices, their passion for nursing, and their unwavering commitment to providing the highest level of care to their patients.
