How cycling is bringing Filipino bikers together while showcasing Dubai’s scenic routes

Cycling in Dubai has grown into a movement that not only highlights the city’s world-class biking tracks but also encourages a healthy and active lifestyle. What started as a personal fitness journey has now connected a community of Filipino bikers who share a passion for the sport. Erwin Gutierrez, a manager at Goodrich Maritime in Dubai, has embraced this lifestyle, balancing his career, family, and love for biking while inspiring others to explore Dubai’s scenic cycling routes.

Erwin’s journey into cycling began during the later stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. “The pandemic brought me to self-rediscovery, work-life balance, and the importance of health,” he recalls to The Global Filipino Magazine. During this period, cyclists were among the first groups permitted to engage in outdoor physical activities. Encouraged by a close friend, he bought a bike and started cycling, despite having no prior knowledge of the sport.

“At first, I didn’t know how big the world of cycling was. All I knew was that I enjoyed doing it—I felt relaxed, and there was this unique euphoric feeling whenever I was riding a bike,” Erwin shares. What started as a simple hobby turned into a passion. “Cycling gave me endurance, fitness, and a lot of health benefits. I think most of my group members have similar stories about how they found cycling.”

Life in Dubai and personal growth

Before moving to Dubai, Erwin worked as a sales engineer in a manufacturing company in the Philippines. Like many overseas Filipinos, he dreamed of a better future and moved to Dubai in search of career growth. “By God’s grace, I’ve been living here for almost two decades now. I am happily married, have three beautiful daughters, and currently work as a manager in a shipping company.”

Although he wasn’t the sporty type growing up, he began his fitness journey late—only in 2021—through cycling. His dedication and commitment have led him to bigger challenges, including completing his first triathlon, T100, last year. Now, he is training for his first Ironman competition, a feat that requires immense physical and mental endurance.

As an avid cyclist, Erwin sees Dubai as an ideal place for the sport. “I am truly grateful and feel privileged to live here. The UAE is known for hosting major international cycling events and is home to Team UAE Emirates, one of the best professional cycling teams in the world,” he says. The city has also invested in world-class cycling infrastructure, making it a dream destination for bikers.

“Dubai is such a bike-friendly city. Thanks to the leadership and the government, we give them our highest appreciation for taking initiatives and supporting sports programs that promote a healthy lifestyle.” He highlights the city’s massive bike lanes that connect different parts of Dubai and exclusive cycling tracks that are safe, accessible 24/7, and free for the public. “Imagine enjoying a bike ride on a safe track while overlooking Dubai’s breathtaking skyline—it gives you an immense sense of pride living in this city.”

Dubai’s renowned cycling tracks, including DXBike, Nad Al Sheba, and Al Qudra Desert, provide free amenities such as shower rooms and parking. These facilities attract not just local riders but also cyclists from around the world.

Managing a community of Filipino bikers

While cycling is a personal passion, Erwin has also taken on the role of leading an informal group of Filipino cyclists in Dubai. “Organizing a social ride is actually challenging, primarily because of schedule constraints. Most cyclists here have other priorities beyond the sport,” he explains.

Fortunately, technology has helped bridge the gap. “With social media platforms and WhatsApp, it’s easier to keep everyone connected and informed about ride schedules. Filipino cyclists are known to be warm, sociable, and respected in the local cycling community.”

Erwin’s love for cycling has also translated into a strong social media presence, with his Instagram account (@erwin_cyclist) now approaching 40,000 followers. His content showcases high-end bikes, top-of-the-line components, and Dubai’s impressive cycling spots.

“I consider it both a privilege and a responsibility to have this kind of following. I create reels featuring good bikes and cycling gear, but more importantly, I promote Dubai as an excellent place for cycling,” he shares. His first viral reel featured the bike of world champion Remco Evenepoel, which helped grow his audience significantly.

“I want people to see that there’s a whole world in cycling—it’s not just about having a bike. My goal is to promote cycling as the most beautiful sport.” His account has connected him with fellow enthusiasts worldwide, including other nationalities who share his passion.

Celebrity encounters on the cycling track

Recently, Filipino personality Ion Perez joined one of Erwin’s cycling sessions. “I knew Ion was a known cyclist and a collector of beautiful road bikes. We were already connected on Instagram and exchanged messages from time to time,” Erwin recalls.

Initially, Ion didn’t plan on cycling during his visit to Dubai, as he didn’t bring his gear. But after meeting Erwin, he was convinced to give it a try. “I explained to him that cycling here is much safer, and I encouraged him to experience it,” he says.

Once a cyclist, always a cyclist—Ion eventually accepted the invitation. “He asked me to take him to a local shop to get the stuff he needed, and we organized a social ride for him. Thanks to my friends who supported and joined the ride. Ion said he enjoyed it and appreciated the cycling track and the warm acceptance of fellow cyclists.”

Ion even promised to come back for more rides. “He’s such a friendly and humble person. It was an honor to ride with him—it was truly an unforgettable experience. Last year, our group also welcomed Boss Toyo, and we continue to welcome guests. We are always ready to receive them.”

Looking ahead, Erwin and his group plan to continue their cycling activities regularly, focusing on health and fitness while welcoming new riders. “You will see us at DXBike on weekdays, with some riding in the mornings. Those interested can follow my Instagram for event and collaboration updates.”

He hopes that more Filipinos will visit Dubai and experience its exceptional cycling scene. More importantly, he dreams of seeing similar world-class cycling tracks built in the Philippines. “Our aim is to get the attention of our local government to create a safe environment for cyclists in our country. That’s the dream of many Filipino cyclists here.”

For those who are considering cycling as a sport, Erwin offers words of encouragement: “It’s never too late to start your fitness journey. Get on a bike, enjoy the ride, and discover a whole new world of adventure.”
