They say life is a journey, not a destination—a sentiment that perfectly describes the experiences of many Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) who navigate unfamiliar territories in pursuit of a better future. Among them is Jackie Lou B. Valdez, who has spent the past decade building a life and career abroad. Now a Sales Manager at Best Dreams Travel & Tourism LLC in the UAE, Jackie reflects on the challenges, opportunities, and triumphs that have defined her journey. Guided by her mantra, “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are,” she inspires fellow Filipinos to persevere and thrive amidst life’s uncertainties.
Jackie’s journey abroad began in 2013 when she took her first job in the UAE at a travel agency. “I’ve been working in a travel agency since 2013. It was my first job in the UAE,” she shares with The Global Filipino Magazine. Over the years, her career expanded, providing her with opportunities to hone her expertise in the travel and tourism industry.
Her responsibilities as a Sales Manager include connecting with clients from diverse cultural backgrounds, staying updated on travel trends, and ensuring exceptional customer service. “I enjoy my current work in the UAE as it allows me to connect with people from diverse cultures, which is one of the most rewarding aspects of working abroad. The opportunity to interact with international clients, explore new travel trends, and continually learn from different perspectives keeps me motivated and engaged in my role.”
Her career spans more than just the UAE. Before settling here, she worked in Singapore’s food and beverage industry and as a sales representative in Macau. These roles helped her build the strong customer service skills that are now central to her success in sales. “These roles allowed me to develop strong customer service skills and a deep understanding of the hospitality and sales sectors,” she explains.
The motivation behind the journey
Jackie’s decision to work abroad stems from her desire for professional growth and financial stability for her family. “I wanted to gain international work experience and improve my career opportunities in the travel industry. Working in different countries—UAE, Singapore, and Macau—allowed me to develop a global perspective and work with diverse cultures, which has been valuable for both my professional and personal growth,” she explains.
Additionally, her work abroad enables her to support her daughters—aged 12 and 1—and provide better opportunities for them. “Working overseas as a mom allows me to provide for my daughter’s education in the UAE, support my family’s needs, and gain valuable international experience while enhancing my career prospects and personal growth.”
Like many OFWs, Jackie has faced her share of struggles. The COVID-19 pandemic posed significant challenges, particularly as income streams dried up while expenses persisted. “During the COVID-19 pandemic, we struggled with no income while still needing to pay rent and cover daily expenses,” she recalls. Despite these difficulties, Jackie credits her resilience and the support of her family for helping her persevere.
Balancing work and family
Jackie successfully balances her demanding career with her role as a mother. Her eldest daughter, who is studying in the UAE, motivates her to keep striving for success. Jackie finds satisfaction in her ability to provide for her family and to set a positive example for her children. “The financial stability and the chance to provide better opportunities for my family motivated me to explore jobs abroad,” she says.
While Jackie has accomplished much in her 10 years overseas, she remains focused on her future goals. Once her time abroad concludes, she envisions returning home to the Philippines to establish a business and spend more time with her family. “My long-term goal is to use the skills and experiences I’ve gained abroad to create a stable livelihood back home. I also want to support advocacies that help fellow OFWs transition smoothly back to the Philippines,” she shares.
To her fellow Filipinos navigating the complexities of life abroad, Jackie offers heartfelt advice: “Focus on your goals, but don’t forget to take care of yourself and your relationships. Trustworthy connections are essential, especially when you’re away from home. Also, make sure to manage your finances wisely and always be prepared for unforeseen challenges.”
